India’s New Growth Playbook 2026: AI Partnerships, Faith & Finance, and the Shift to Value

By Eve Chen·Oct 5, 2026·3 min read

Summary

India’s digital growth is maturing: scale alone is no longer the key metric. In H1 2026, app downloads rose 3% YoY, while in-app purchase increased 34%, signaling that engagement, retention, and monetization now drive value. The report examines this shift across Gen AI, entertainment, finance, shopping, quick commerce, and gaming.

Perplexity’s July 2025 partnership with Airtel gave 360 million users a free 12-month Pro subscription. Downloads surged 625% in the launch month and MAUs peaked at 22 million. Even after redemptions closed and downloads normalized, Perplexity retained nearly 14 million MAUs by July 2026, with India IAP revenue up about 60%. Distribution partnerships can deliver sustained usage and monetization, not just reach.

Faith, spirituality, and astrology apps have more than doubled MAUs since 2023, reaching nearly 80 million in 2026. Melooha users are 66.7x more likely to use Wint Wealth and 41.4x more likely to use Gullak than the general population. Finance brands should look beyond conventional channels; cross-app affinity can uncover high-potential audiences.

Short Drama is shifting from acquisition to engagement. Downloads are softening while monetization hits new highs. Kuku TV ranks among the fastest-growing apps by IAP revenue without leading download growth. Competition is intensifying around retention and South India regional expansion.

Season, metro, and channel are also critical. Festive periods align Shopping and Lending demand. Apparel and Beauty are growth pockets within retail. Myntra over-indexes in Visakhapatnam, Chennai, and Kolkata; Quick Commerce leaders show distinct regional footprints. Growth planning must account for demand timing, local momentum, and channel mix.

Actionable takeaways for ad ops: prioritize retention, LTV, and IAP KPIs over installs; evaluate distribution partnerships for downstream engagement; leverage affinity data for cross-category targeting; plan seasonal and geo-specific buys; and use first-party/partner data to discover non-obvious audiences. India’s next phase rewards brands that convert scale into value through smarter distribution, localized strategies, and new discovery channels.

Analyst Note

The headline divergence — 3% download growth against 34% IAP growth — is the kind of figure that quietly reshapes how UA and monetization teams frame their own KPIs. What's notable here is that India's shift is presented less as a maturity story than as an audience-targeting problem. The Perplexity/Airtel case matters less for its 625% download spike than for what followed: retention held at roughly 14 million MAU after redemptions closed. That gap between install events and durable engagement is one most UA dashboards still blur, and it is exactly the gap distribution partnerships are being judged on now.

The faith-app affinity data is the more structurally interesting signal. Overlap multipliers of that magnitude imply behavioral and contextual signals are becoming viable substitutes for the demographic and interest targeting that privacy changes have degraded elsewhere. Worth watching whether Indian publishers productize those overlaps directly or leave it to DSP-side modeling.

The practical implication for monetization teams is that category benchmarks carry less predictive weight — most visibly in short drama, where download and IAP curves have decoupled. Season, metro and channel are now the variables explaining variance.

India Won the Install Race — Now Comes the Value Game

India's gaming market has won the install race, but the next phase demands a shift to measurable value. With over 500 million players and 97.5% Android penetration, mid-core and hardcore games generate 70% of revenue from in-app purchases. Yet, average channel usage (13) lags behind the global benchmark (17), limiting growth. For ad ops decision-makers, the key is moving beyond low-cost installs to focus on day-3 retention, cohort analysis, and life-time value. Diversifying marketing channels and tailoring strategies for Android's high-churn environment are critical to building sustainable gaming businesses.

Japan’s finance app growth in 2026 | Adjust

Japan's finance app category is outperforming, with H1 2026 installs up 8% YoY and sessions up 40%—nearly 5x the install growth and well ahead of global figures (5% and 29%). Stock trading is the standout subvertical: installs +90% YoY and average session length climbing to 11.7 minutes, driven by NISA reforms and a retail investor resurgence. Retention is improving across the full 30-day curve (D1 17% to 19%, D30 7% to 8%). For ad ops teams, the takeaway is clear: prioritize measurement depth, re-engagement, and channel-level quality over top-of-funnel volume alone.

Cross-channel marketing analytics: how it works in 2026

Cross-channel marketing analytics isn't about putting Meta, Google, and TikTok numbers side by side—they often double-count the same customer journey. Fragmented identity is the real culprit; without a first-party Customer User ID, attribution measures platform credit, not customer value. The article explains that deduplicating conversions across mobile, web, and CTV can lift attributed revenue by 30–60% and improve ROAS by 20%. It walks through attribution models, warns against platform-native analytics, and advises using an independent MMP for true cross-channel measurement. Ad ops takeaway: fix identity resolution first, because AI-driven optimization and budget allocation depend on trustworthy, deduplicated data.

Cracking the 2026 Holiday Season: A Data-Backed Playbook for Marketing Leaders

Q4 2026 planning should treat peak shopping as a compressed event, not a week. Black Friday/Cyber Monday purchase lift runs 2–3x install lift, so ad ops must schedule by daypart and hour. Singles Day is not global: Brazil, UAE and Spain show real lift, while US/France barely react. CPI spikes hardest in supposedly cheap markets—Spain’s CPI rose nearly 50%. Remarketing already drives 65–92% of non-organic spend and rises during peak. Deep linking is critical: deep-linked users are ~2x more likely to purchase and spend nearly 3x more. Benchmark market CPI, shift budget to remarketing, and connect every entry point.
